Hospitalizations continue to drop as state reports 3,212 new COVID-19 cases, 68 new deaths

Hospitalizations continue gradual declines from their mid-July peaks, as Arizona reported another 3,212 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and 68 more known deaths.

Inpatient hospitalizations, ICU beds in use, ventilators in use and emergency department visits by suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients all continued gradual downward trends on Thursday, according to hospital data reported to the state. But hospitals remain under high pressure, with many COVID-19 patients.

Identified cases rose to 174,010 and known deaths totaled 3,694, according to the daily report by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

​Like much of the nation, Arizona sees hotter-than-normal year so far

Temperatures soared higher than normal across much of the nation in June and through the first six months of 2020, putting the country on track for what could be another one of its warmest years on record.

July could break records in Phoenix after long stretches of hot days and nights. High temperatures have topped 110 degrees 18 times in July at Sky Harbor International Airport and for seven days mid-month, the temperature never fell below 90 degrees.

With Friday morning’s temperature of 91 degrees, Phoenix has posted daily lows of 90 degrees or higher 16 times this year, which would be a record for Sky Harbor.

Arizona deaths in June far exceeded a typical year. Is it just COVID-19, or is something else happening?

Arizona saw far more deaths this June than a typical June in previous years, and well beyond the official counts for COVID-19 deaths. 

In June 2020, the Arizona Department of Health Services statistics show 6,265 people died. Last June, it was 4,689. This year’s total is higher, by far, than any of the past five years.

The health department’s chart of COVID-19 deaths by date shows 952 deaths attributed to the disease in June, which is far fewer than the increased number of deaths overall in June. July’s COVID-19 death numbers so far are higher than June’s. Both June and July’s numbers of COVID-19 deaths will continue to fluctuate for several weeks.
